Censorship of press is step backward: Aga Muntazir

Srinagar, Mar 3: Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party leader and MLA Budgam, Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi, on Tuesday came down heavily on the administration for censoring the social media handles of several local news outlets, terming the move an attack on democratic values. As per KNS, Mehdi expressed deep concern over the blocking of digital platforms belonging to prominent newspapers—Kashmir Life, Greater Kashmir, and Rising Kashmir.

He stated that restricting or suppressing lawful reporting during critical periods only deepens public mistrust.

“Now, more than ever, we must uphold the principles of freedom of expression and protect the independence of media institutions. Silencing the press is not a solution—it is a step backward,” the MLA stated. He urged the authorities concerned to immediately reconsider such actions and reaffirm their commitment to protecting press freedom and democratic rights. The censorship has drawn widespread criticism from journalists and political figures, who argue that such measures undermine the credibility of governance in the region.
