2770 school buildings damaged in last year’s calamity: Government

Srinagar, Apr 1: The Jammu and Kashmir government on Wednesday informed the Legislative Assembly that as many as 2,770 school buildings were damaged due to the natural calamity that struck the Union Territory last year.

Of these, 2,645 buildings are in the Jammu division and 125 in the Kashmir division.

The information was provided in reply to a clubbed question raised by MLAs Sunil Bhardwaj, Yudhvir Singh, Tariq Hameed Karra and Dr Narinder Singh Raina, who had sought details of damages to roads, government buildings, water supply schemes, public infrastructure, commercial establishments and residential houses.

The government said that during the current financial year 2025–26, an amount of Rs 100 crore has been released under the Capex Budget for restoration works, with Rs 5 crore earmarked for each district under the head “Flood Relief Measures”.

“The release was made to ensure timely execution of restoration works necessitated by damages caused due to recent floods in the affected areas,” the government informed the House.

It added that, following directions from the Finance Department during the budget meeting held on December 1, 2025, all Deputy Commissioners were asked to assess and project the actual requirement of funds up to the end of March 2026.

Providing a break-up of damages in the Jammu division, the government said 971 primary schools, 889 middle schools, 251 high schools and 156 higher secondary schools were affected.

District-wise, the highest number of damaged buildings was reported from Jammu district (843), followed by Udhampur (448), Doda (304), Rajouri (245), Kathua (208), Kishtwar (202), Poonch (175), Reasi (118), Samba (61) and Ramban (41).

In the Kashmir division, 125 school buildings were damaged, including three in Srinagar, 20 in Budgam, three in Ganderbal, 43 in Anantnag, 41 in Pulwama, 11 in Kulgam and four in Baramulla.

These include 30 primary schools, 82 middle schools, 10 high schools and three higher secondary schools.

The government said that out of the 125 damaged structures in Kashmir division, seven require permanent restoration, while the remaining buildings will undergo temporary repairs.
