“It’s not a generation gap; it’s a communication gap.” This sentence stuck with me in one of my sesions at the GKSC (Greater Kashmir School of Communications) bootcamp. In that moment, I realized that the distance between people isn’t measured in time, but in the words we fail to say. I knew then the impact of this realization would be immense, provided it found the right environment to breathe.
Month of October. Year 2025. That’s when I decided to join the camp and I cannot be gladder that I did. It was a transformative departure from the rigid structures of traditional education. Instead of the typical teacher-student divide, the room functioned more as a vibrant intellectual playground, where the roles were fluid and everyone contributed equally to the collective growth. As such, this profoundly democratic environment, allowed people to foster their authentic creativity and encouraged it as ‘the standard’. This place was a meeting ground of minds and souls where every conversation was deep, honest and unfiltered. We spoke of things that typically remain buried and found a rare connection that transcended the surface. By stripping away the formal pretences we were also able to let go of our own internal hesitations.
By focusing on the raw acts of reading and writing, we encountered a whole new world that otherwise remains unknown. I got the confidence to translate my inner library into reality which also resonated with others. This experience was not only limited to me. I saw my peers undergo the same metamorphosis and attain a powerful voice. This experience was nothing short of inspiring. I walked away not just with better skills, but with a personality I can now call my own; a belief in my own creative application and its impact.
The relief of stepping out from a high-pressure environment to an empowered creative community like this boot camp is truly transformational. This personal unburdening is not just a luxury; it is a necessity for survival in a setting where the weight of the world often stifles the individual. True progress lies in nurturing environments where people are encouraged to live fully and find genuine joy in their labour, recognizing that a ‘lesser known’ or ‘lower paying job’ that provides deep fulfilment is infinitely more valuable than a lucrative JOB that breeds misery.
In a place like Kashmir, where so many talented individuals succumb to the weight of societal pressure and expectations, programs like these serve as a vital lifeline. Without such platforms, immense potential often remains dormant, as people struggle to realize how much they truly have to contribute to society. The paradigm must shift in order to make talent discovery a mandatory standard rather than the traditional high-paying career paths. When we prioritize the polishing of an individual’s unique potential over the pursuit of a pay-check, we unlock a level of human contribution that ‘monetized’ roles can never match.
We must loudly applaud and support such spaces because they empower not only the present but also the future. By validating the voices of today, we ensure that the stories of tomorrow are no longer lost to silence.
As a result of this particular initiative, I can affirm that it forged a new generation of writers, poets, journalists, film-makers, who otherwise might have stayed hidden in the shadows of fear. In such spaces, we no longer just remain participants; we become the living proof of what happens when potential is met with opportunity. . I am immensely grateful to our mentors for giving us such a chance to undo our earlier versions and come out with newer better ones.
We must collectively dismiss the culture of shaming unconventional choices and instead champion the person’s individual happiness as the ultimate metric of success. By supporting one another in our authentic pursuits, we cultivate a harmonious and positively energized atmosphere where everyone has the psychological safety to thrive, proving that the goal of society should be the communal well-being born from personal passion, thus creating a more compassionate, resilient and inspired global family.
