Srinagar, Mar 6: The University of Kashmir (KU) has scripted a historic sporting feat by clinching 17 medals and the overall champions title at the All India Inter-University Winter Games Championship 2026 held at the world-famous ski resort of Gulmarg.
The athletes from the varsity dominated the recently concluded All India Inter-University Winter Games 2025–26, hosted by the Central University of Kashmir (CUK)
The championship witnessed the participation from universities across the country and featured intense competition in multiple winter sports disciplines.
The athletes from KU bagged four Gold, nine Silver and four Bronze medals in the championship.
In the women’s category Parihaan Peerzada Shah emerged as the standout performer who bagged three Gold and one Silver medal in Alpine Skiing and Mountaineering Skiing events.
Another athlete, Misbah Maqbool bagged one Gold and two Silver medals.
In the men’s category, Zubair Ahmad Mir won three Silver medals in Alpine Skiing, while Imran Manzoor secured two Silver medals in the same discipline.
Similarly in Snowboarding events, Asif Shabir Sheikh clinched two Silver medals while Balvir Singh won two Bronze medals as well. Umar Bashir bagged one Silver medal in Mountaineering Skiing, taking the University’s total medal count to 17.
Apart from the winter games, the University also made a strong show at the 3rd Chancellor’s Trophy organised by the University of Jammu.
The men’s volleyball team secured a Silver medal, while the women’s basketball team won Bronze medal. The championship saw participation from universities and colleges across Jammu and Kashmir besides Ladakh and Punjab.
Earlier, the athletes from KU exhibited their talent at the All India Inter-University Winter Games Championship 2025 as well.
Zubair Ahmad Mir won Gold while Aneesa Anjum Jeelani secured Bronze in the individual Ice skating event.
In martial arts, KU athlete Mohammad Saleem won a Bronze medal in the 60-kg category at the All India Inter-University Wushu Championship organised by Chandigarh University.
The University has strengthened its sports ecosystem through regular competitions held over the past many years.
Vice Chancellor KU, Prof. Nilofar Khan said the varsity being equipped with modern sports infrastructure and structured training programmes, is steadily emerging as a major centre for competitive sports development in the country.
“The University has applied for recognition as a Centre of Excellence under the Khelo India programme of the Government of India,” she said.
