Earthquake hits Tajikistan, tremors felt in Kashmir

Srinagar, Jan 09: A moderate earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale struck the Central Asian country of Tajikistan in the early hours of Friday, sending shock waves as far as Kashmir at around 2:44 am. However, there were no reports of loss of life or damage to property at the time of filing this report.

According to National Center for Seismology, the tremor occurred at 2:44:16 am (IST) with its epicenter located at latitude 38.26° North and longitude 73.42° East.

The earthquake originated at a depth of 110 kilometres in Tajikistan, about 283 km east-northeast of Fayzabad, Afghanistan, classifying it as a deep-focus quake.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage at the time of filing this report. Due to its significant depth, the impact on the surface is expected to be limited, National Center for Seismology said.
