Srinagar, Apr 30: An awareness campaign on balanced and judicious nutrient management was organised by Krishi Vigyan Kendra Srinagar under the aegis of the Directorate of Extension, SKUAST-Kashmir, in block Khonmoh.
The campaign, part of KVK Srinagar’s ongoing outreach programme to promote scientific agriculture, focused on encouraging farmers to adopt soil- and leaf-test-based nutrient management practices across horticultural and cereal crops. The initiative aims to reduce input costs while enhancing productivity and farm incomes.
During the day-long programme, scientists led by Prof. S. A. Simnani, Head of KVK Srinagar, highlighted the importance of site-specific nutrient management. They cautioned against the adverse effects of indiscriminate and imbalanced fertiliser use on soil health, crop yield, and environmental sustainability.
Farmers were sensitised about the role of macro- and micro-nutrients in crop growth and the need for precise application based on scientific soil and leaf analysis. Experts also discussed integrated nutrient management approaches, combining organic manures, biofertilisers, and chemical fertilisers to improve soil fertility and nutrient-use efficiency.
Special emphasis was laid on the adoption of natural and organic farming practices by Dr Ishtiyak A. Mir, Nodal Officer for the Natural Farming Project, to reduce dependence on chemical inputs, restore soil health, and enhance the quality of produce.
The programme witnessed active participation from farmers, orchardists, students, and rural youth from different parts of Srinagar district. Participants appreciated the initiative and expressed willingness to adopt the recommended practices.
The campaign concluded with an interactive session, during which experts addressed farmers’ queries and provided advisory support for implementing nutrient management strategies at the field level.
